The recently released X-Men: Apocalypse has received mix reviews and personally, I liked the movie, but there were certain elements that weren’t explored. No matter what we think about the X-Men movies, because the time when the next movie comes out, we’ll line up at the ticket counter.

There have been a total of 9 movies in the X-Men universe (including Deadpool) and X-Men: Apocalypse being the ninth movie. Currently, there’s not news about the next installment or what it will be called, but we do know that The Wolverine 3 is releasing next year and we sure hope it’s somewhere along the lines of ‘Old Man Logan‘ story.

When watching the X-Men movies, it might get confusing to watch them in proper order because there’s the order in which they were released and then there’s chronological order based on the events of each movie.

Watch X-Men Movies in Chronological Order

The first X-Men movie was released in the year 2000 followed by X2: X-Men United in 2003 and then X-Men: The Last Stand in 2006.

The movies were going super smoothly, but then came the one-off Wolverine movie titles The Wolverine: Origins in 2009, which essentially destroyed everything, including a fan-favorite characters (read, Deadpool).

After the disappointing Wolverine origins movie, the focus went on Professor X and Magneto and their friendship. The X-Men: First Class movie was released that focused on the mutant-kind showing itself to the world for the first time and the beginning of a friend-enemy relationship between Professor X and Magneto.

The movie was based on the people getting to know that there are mutants in the world for the first time and the consequences of that are explored in X-Men: Days of Future Past in 2014. There was a direct sequel to the Wolverine Origins movie, The Wolverine, in 2013 but that doesn’t matter right now.

Basically, what the movie did was completely reboot the X-Men timeline and erased all the events that took place during all the X-Men films and the two Wolverine films, except X-Men: First Class.

And thanks to the reboot (and the efforts of Ryan Reynolds), we finally got a Deadpool movie that we all were waiting for!

So this was the complete list of the X-Men movies in order of their release dates. Let’s make a list for every one’s convenience.

X-Men Movies in Order of their Release Dates

  • X-Men (2000)
  • X2 (2003)
  • X-Men: The Last Stand (2006)
  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine (2009)
  • X-Men: First Class (2011)
  • The Wolverine (2013)
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past (2014)
  • Deadpool (2016)
  • X-Men: Apocalypse (2016)

We have included Deadpool movie in the list because it certainly seems to be within the continuity of the X-Men universe and the Days of Future Past was what made it possible.

List of X-Men Movies in Chronological Order

This is where it will get confusing!

Whenever time-travel is added to the story, it becomes confusing as hell but it’s not that tough once everything is explained. We are going to make sure that you don’t get confused with the chronological order of the X-Men movies.

There are basically two orders of the X-Men movies based on their events and we’ll talk about both of them.

Chronological Timeline

  • X-Men Origins: Wolverine
  • X-Men: First Class
  • X-Men
  • X2
  • X-Men: The Last Stand
  • The Wolverine
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past

The X-Men: Days of Future Past wiped everything out and left the slate clean for new events to take place. The new timeline of the X-Men movies is as follows:

Second Chronological Timeline

  • X-Men: First Class
  • X-Men: Days of Future Past
  • X-Men: Apocalypse

If you are asking where Deadpool fits in this, then we don’t really have an answer. The reason is because the events in Deadpool movie happened in the present times and the current X-Men timeline is still in the 1980s and hasn’t reached in the present.

Also, it isn’t really related to the X-Men movies story-wise, so not including it in the list X-Men movies in chronological order seems like the best idea.

So, there you have it! That’s the complete article on the list of all the X-Men movies in order. I hope that now everything will be clear. You can watch the movies in chronological order or on the order of their release dates, it’s all up to you.

If you liked the article, then I would appreciate it if you could share it with your friends and clear their doubts, if any, about the X-Men movies in chronological order of their release dates and events.
